Saw this little gem of a movie last night. I was going to entitle my review "Olsen in acting shock" but that would be very unfair to Elizabeth Olsen who carries this movie single-handedly with a composure and confidence that belies the fact that she is related to Mary-Kate and Ashleigh.
The story centres on Olsen's character as she escapes the clutches of a cult led by the Manson-like and charismatic Patrick (John Hawkes). We then get the twin track of MMMM's rehabilitation into the real world and the story of why she ran away from the sect. Sean Durkin does an amazing job with this movie and the cuts between the two parallel story threads are genuinely unsettling - you're never quite sure which part of the story you are in at any time. The parallels between both of MMMM's lives are sketched out in an involving way but with a vagueness that asks you to do some thinking for yourself. This is a movie you need to get involved with and to bring something to the table in order to get something out of it.
