16 year-old gymnast Gabrielle "Gabby" Douglas defeated all odds and landed the number one spot on the US Women's Gymnastics team for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Over the weekend in San Jose, California, the official team members were finally announced during the Olympic Gymnastics Trial. After fellow gymnast Jordyn Wieber consistently held the #1 spot over the past 4 years of gymnastics competitions, Douglasmanaged to break Wieber's winning streak and out-perform her by 0.100 points.
When asked how it felt to come out victorious, the elated Virginia Beach-native proclaimed, "Wow, I finally made it! I believed in myself and I proved that I could do it! When it was over, I just said, 'Yes! I'm going to London!'" Although Gabby aka "Flying Squirrel" made the official roster, other noteworthy gymnasts and athletes will be making their way over to London in hopes of bring home the gold.
Allentown, Pennsylvania-native Elizabeth Pricehas been selected as an alternate for the U.S. Women's Gymnastics team. Bronx, New York's very own John Orozco finished in 2nd place and will be competing on behalf of the U.S. Men's Gymnastics team. And lastly, Charlotte, North Carolina's very own Cullen Jones will be representing the U.S. Men's Swimming team after winning the men's 50 freestyle and setting a new meet record of 21.59 seconds. Also, the current 110M Hurdle World Champion 25 year-old Jason Richardson will be in London participating in 110M Hurdles after placing 2nd in during the trials.
